Whether it's investing in a versatile leather biker jacket, giving just a nod to the houndstooth trend, or having a metal moment with a studded shift dress, this fall's fashion is distinctive and desirable, with the reinvention of some tough masculine looks.サソTough urban cool at Topshop Unique's London fashion show

LONDON - Leather dungarees, velvet boiler suits, full-length military coats: Unique by Topshop's new collection is all about utility dressing gone glamorous.

Unique, the design-led offshoot of Britain's popular high street store Topshop, gave London Fashion Week a good dose of tough, urban cool with its new autumn and winter collection.

A model sporting a floor-length military green coat over a black bralet and black trousers, felt baseball cap and spike-heeled, lace-up army boots opened the show. The message was clear: Don't mess with this girl.

More military green and a great deal of black leather followed, in the form of jumpsuits, pleated, low-slung skirts, kilts, and shiny knee-high boots.

Oversized sweaters, many with a cross motif, were paired with barely-there shorts, and there was a covetable collection of overcoats with biker flap, gunmetal buttons and zip detailing.

But while the overall esthetic was clearly street-smart, there was elegant, classic styling here too - a black velvet set of dungarees, for example, was paired with a billowing white silk blouse, an outfit that cleverly turned workman's apparel into evening wear.サソTough vaccines last even if heat is on

VACCINES that can survive extreme heat and cold could help protect millions more children in poor countries. The key is a "stable-liquid" technology, which could also be used to make vaccines against pandemic diseases that could be kept stockpiled for many years.

As much as $300 million a year is spent in poor countries on the "cold chain" - keeping vaccines refrigerated. Despite this, nearly half of all vaccines are spoilt when they get too warm. The developer of the stable-liquid technology, Cambridge Biostability in the UK, says that preventing this waste will enable 10 million more children a year to receive vaccinations at no extra cost.

The key is encasing the vaccine's ingredients in a sugary coat that preserves them at temperatures of up to 60 ツーC. The coating is made of combinations of simple natural sugars, such as raffinose, and an amino acid, typically glutamine. "They form a .サソTough Vol

The Review

Packaging:

Tough has to have one of the cheapest production values I have seen from Viz in a while. They do not use the original cover art for this volume; instead, they dig up a random piece with a character design that is not used yet. The front cover has main character Miyazawa Kiichi sitting down in a kneeling position on a stale background. Above Kiichi there is the "TOUGH" logo in huge sweaty block letters (yes, there is perspiration). The opposite cover is on fire, and the flames are surrounding the spoiler-ific volume description and a small piece of character art featuring Kiichi stretching.

Inside the volume header is simply the logo in black and white. There are no chapter headers or extras to this series, so Viz just jumps into the action after another publication notes and contents pages. The printing is pretty good, especially when considering how much screen tone there is. I did not notice any major aliasing, and the inks looked clean. Good, but simple production.

Artwork:

Let me start off by saying the cover art is deceiving. Yeah there is very little art there, but the character design used on the cover is not what is present inside. Saruwatari will start to move toward this more modern design down the line, but currently Kiichi is nowhere near as lean or clean as the one on the cover. Actually, Sarawatari's designs are rather bulky. Characters tend to be on the big bulging side; even female characters tend to be rounder then slimmer. I guess the best way to describe it is a combination of Itagaki Keisuke (Grappler Baki) and Hara Tetsuo (Fist of the North Star). While characters are large and beefy (typical of Hara works), they have extreme expressions and strange quirks (ala Itagaki). I cannot say I like the look, but as long as the action is good, I could care less.

These characters tend to only look normal in certain angels. Therefore, in action scenes characters tend to lose detail and start to deform a bit. Fortunately, with the comedic and punk attitude of this series, it is not too distracting. Costume designs are really interesting. Leather, jeans, dragon jackets and trench coats are all present; building a sense of punk and yanki themes that has yet to have been clearly established
