| Whenever I get asked what I do for a living and reply that I'm a Life Coach, I usually get either one of two responses. The first is a blank stare as though I told them I wrestle mountain goats for a living and they aren't quite sure what to say. And the other one is "I"d like to be a Life Coach, I think I'd be good at that"Even though life teaching, or at least competent Life Coaching is a highly skilled practice, it seems that a great deal of people think they would be good at it from the get-go and without any Life Coach training. After all, how hard can it be? You listen to somebody telling you their problems and then you fix them.Unfortunately, it isn't quite that easy and Life tutors aren't paid to fix people or ram advice down clients throats. They are paid to ask the right questions at the right time in order to shift a clients thinking. After all, if cannot get his client to think differently this change is only ever going to happen by chance. And that's not the most effective way to move through life.So when somebody tells me they would like usually ask them why they think they are suited to the roll. Nine times out of ten they will reply that they are a great listener and I agree, that is a good starting point.Life Coaches do indeed need to be great listeners, but there is so much more to it than that.
